My Writing

Answers to Frequently Asked Questions about my writing.

How old were you when you started writing stories for children and what made you want to write for children?

I was 28 years old when I started. The reason I write for children is that I love making up fun stories in my head, and lots of the things I think about are the sorts of things kids think about. Maybe I never really grew up!

I'm not sensible enough to write for adults.

Where do you write?

Usually at my computer at home or sometimes at the library.

Are you going to write another book? If so, is it about Harriet?

Yes, I have just finished writing another book, but it is not about Harriet. I am going to write a third Harriet book soon.

Do you like writing your books?

Most of the time. Playing with words, making up ideas and being creative is fun. Sometimes though, I find writing hard.

Are any of your other books going to be about animals?

Well, seeing as I love all sorts of animals, I will definitely be including them in more of my books. Hmmm ... what could I write about a hippopotamus?

Why did you decide to write children's books?

Mainly because I like to have fun, and children's stories always seem to be so much more fun than the stuff for adults. Sometimes my family and friends wonder if I'm really 36 years old, because I can be really silly, I love to make up dumb jokes, and I have been known to tip water over people's heads at family gatherings.

Where do you get your ideas?

My ideas come from many places. Sometimes I overhear an interesting conversation, or see an unusual story on the news, or read something in the newspaper. All of these things can be turned into great story ideas.

When creating characters, I especially like to "steal" strange quirks or funny habits from my family or other people I know, and use them to build ficticious people.

And of course sometimes I just think up weird and wonderful (or just plain stupid) ideas in my imagination, often while I'm walking or driving or doing the shopping.
